Beowulf returns to Geatland. Fifty years later he fights a dragon. Sacrifice can benefit the greater good.” For example, Beowulf is willing to give his life for Hrothgar’s kingdom. Sacrifice can benefit the greater good.
The way we treat ourselves is extraordinary compared to the utilization of figures past. We, humans, are a populous society of affable tributes that are of importance. That we look up to the people that give us safety, as well that show respect and pride. These people are the idols that portray heroism; the general populous agrees that a hero is selfless. One such example is in an epic poem Beowulf.
Beowulf learns, at the end of his life, how to accept all that the good and the bad that he has done in his lifetime. He reflects upon his life decisions and regrets none, which allows Beowulf to welcome death with open arms, not fearing blame from “the Ruler of mankind” (line 2741). Through Beowulf’s final words, the reader may recognize the cultural values of trustworthiness, responsibility, and
For being a king, Loving, Beowulf is a great warrior, his very confident to fight to the monster, but his weaknesses when he see the beautiful girl under the sea, the girl pretend for being a innocent, in an evil side, Beowulf begged, and in loved her, and also when she came to the island, under the king hrothgar, his concern for the people live there. And when he is already a king, she love for the queen, and the other girl, so that when the dragon, came over the village, Beowulf do their best, to secure the queen, his wife, and the village in safe,. Brave and Good warrior, we recover much of what happens during his gap and therefore are able to see how Beowulf comforts himself as both as a warrior and a king, when the final episode, by encountering the dragon, we seen as the responsibilities of a king, who must act for the good of the people, and not just his own glory, he serve and give his life to put away his wife and queen to the dangers. Differ from those of the heroic warrior, his attitudes and characters as a warrior still…
In the whole epic poem Beowulf, he is constantly displaying his humility. Throughout each story he selflessly risked his life in order to save people that he had never met or had no affinity to. Whether it was the people of Herot or his own people he saved many lives, losing his own in the end. In his final battle against the dragon, Beowulf takes upon the quest, knowing that God and fate are not on his side, “ And for the first time in his life that famous prince Fought with fate against him, with glory Denied him.” This one moment is Beowulf’s biggest act of selflessness.
By being sacrificial, Beowulf gains respect and his message of not quitting when it comes to doing what is righteous lives
The main theme in Beowulf is the Comitatus code, which is a code that mainly revolves around loyalty, heroism, and being noble. The warriors live and would die by these rules. An example of this is when Wiglaf says he would rather die than do nothing when fighting the dragon. “As God is my witness, I would rather my body were robbed in the same burning blaze as my gold-giver’s body than go back home bearing arms.” (Heany; page 177, lines 2650-2653).
Everyone has a perspective on good and evil; the battle line between good and even runs through the heart. “Beowulf” illuminates characters that come from dark and deep backgrounds that construct their dauntless actions. In the heroic tale “Beowulf,” the author’s tones strongly demonstrates themes of loyalty, honor, and courage. Raffel’s tones remotely displays the act of loyalty within multiple characters. “Hail to these who will rise to God, drop off their dead bodies” (101).
The safest way to protect mortality from monsters’ wrath is to sacrifice those around. Beowulf vows to fight Grendel sans weapons, but for Beowulf to successfully achieve the takedown he needs to live up to his honorable name, Grendel’s focus must be on someone other than the warrior. When the time comes for Grendel to terrorize Heorot, Beowulf allows the creature to “[grab] and [maul] a man on his bench… And [gorges] on him in lumps, leaving the body utterly lifeless, eaten up” (17-18). Who is Beowulf to value his life over one of his comrades?
This fits with the Ordeal stage in the hero’s journey. Beowulf is faced with a life or death situation and overcomes it.
But he knew the greatest threat came knocking at his door for a fight that will live on being told for eternity. Beowulf sacrificed his own life for those around him, “Quickly, the dragon cam at him, encouraged as Beowulf as Beowulf fell back; its breath fared, and he suffered, wrapped around in swirling flames- a king, before, but now a Beaton warrior” (lines 687-691). In the end Beowulf fought till the end fighting not only for himself but for his people. He fought like a king until his death. Beowulf gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his people.
Beowulf represents many things through this poem, including strength, courage, and bravery. But he also stays very humble throughout the whole play, not wanting to draw a lot of attention to himself. Beowulf can definitely be compared to Jesus in Paradise Lost. They both sacrificed their lives for the sake of others. Beowulf sacrificed his life in his final battle, so that the people in his town could live on in peace.
Beowulf attempted to comfort Hrothgar and the warriors by exclaiming, “Let your sorrow end! It is better for us all to avenge our friends, not mourn them forever”. He then aims to convince Hrothgar that “for the glory of his name, fame after death is the noblest of goals”. Beowulf believes it is worth dying for a good
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Instead of killing people, he wanted to save as many lives as he could. Contrary to Doss, Beowulf was a literary hero who basked in the glory of fame given to him after his many victories of slaying evil pagan monsters. In many ways, these two heroes are very different but in some, they are similar. Someone’s reasoning and intentions for someone completing a heroic or good deed can be a factor in whether that person is a hero or not.
