Comparing Paradise Lost and Beowulf The poems of Beowulf, which is a Anglo Saxon epic, and Paradise Lost, a Christian epic both have a lot of similarities throughout their storyline. Their many similar attributes make them out to be the great epic poems they are today. The stories focus on the good vs. the evil. In both poems, the king figures who are Hrothgar and God call on the hero's, which are Beowulf and Christ to defeat the evil monsters that are threatening to defeat the paradise both stories have created.
An epic poem is a long narrative poem, that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet. Many poets in these ancient times used epic poetry to tell about intense adventures and heroic people, such as Beowulf. They were most commonly told in ancient times because these stories were perfect for telling orally. Beowulf represents many things through this poem, including strength, courage, and bravery. But he also stays very humble throughout the whole play, not wanting to draw a lot of attention to himself. Beowulf can definitely be compared to Jesus in Paradise Lost. They both sacrificed their lives for the sake of others. Beowulf sacrificed his life in his final battle, so that the people in his town could live on in peace. Jesus sacrificed his life to the people and offers to die for mankind flaws. Now Jesus didn't sacrifice his life, in a battle like Beowulf did, but he did choose to save all of mankind by offering up his life. They did it in very different ways, but they still made great sacrifices. This is why people refer to them as great epic heros, and having great strength and
