Satire in Gulliver’s Encounters
Jonathan Swift has used Gulliver’s encounters to illustrate how human behaviors are portrayed by Yahoos and Houyhnhnms. He uses Gulliver to bring out the irony in human beings lives and how human beings hide their character when they want to appear good before people. Today human behavior is geared towards individual’s interests. Human behavior is full of selfishness at the expense of others. In the encounters, the character meets two creatures who are similar to human beings but with contrary characters. The yahoos are more of humans, but Gulliver refuses to identify with the yahoos he detests their character and struggles to be like the Houyhnhnms. Gulliver feels safe with the Houyhnhnms, he learns their language and wants to be like them but when he is in depression, he finds himself acting like the yahoo he is. Gulliver struggles to be someone he is not. In society, human beings are ready to do the impossible just to appear good hiding their characters inside. The focus of the paper is to bring out the difference in the Houyhnhnms and yahoo characters and how this affects Gulliver’s thoughts in his encounters.
Gulliver’s description of the Houyhnhnms is idyllic. He feels that this animal is judicious, rational and orderly. By just appearing on the road Houyhnhnms rescued Gulliver’s from the violent Yahoos without any physical action.
