Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the reader is presented with the timeline of Scout’s coming of age. There are several major events that lead Scout into the woman that she is. In the story we realize the coming of age of Scout, through the development of her empathy, courage and compassion. Coming of age is a young character who undergoes a transition from being a child to an adult. In the novel, there are three important values that Scout learns. The first lesson is “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. Next is when Atticus teaches Scout to keep fighting even if she can’t win. Atticus teaches Scout “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what”. Lastly the lesson found is that “it’s a sin to kill mockingbird”.
