Rules and laws have been around since as early as 500 AD to help keep society in place. However, not all rules have been fair and just to help keep society in place. It is justifiable to take a stand if the rules put in place are unjust. One such example were the different rules of segregation that took away a lot of the minorities freedom that sparked the Civil Rights Movement between the 1950s and 1960s in which caused a series of protests to gain freedom. In the poem, “Ballad of Birmingham” , a little girl says, “And march the streets of Birmingham In a Freedom march today.”(Dudley Randall). In the preface of Antigone, she says to her sister Ismene, “ So gracing him among the death below. But Polyneices, a dishonored course ,... No man may bury him or make lament- Must leave him tombless and unwept…”(Sophocles). Antigone is showing the differences in treatment between the burial of her two brothers due to the decree put in place by Creon and this caused her to take a stand. Another quote from the story says, “But by the death commended; and with them I shall abide ever. As for thee-scorn, if thou wilt, the eternal laws of heaven.” Antigone converses that Ismene is on Creon’s side by not willing to help take a stand against his decree that forbids the proper burial of their brother Polyneices. Antigone was willing to take a stand for her brother’s proper burial and is willing to deal with the consequences for challenging Creon’s decree. In the speech to the Second Virginia Convention,it says, “We have held the subject up in every light of which is capable; but it has all been in vain.”(Patrick Henry). Patrick Henry states that they have done everything possible to get rid of the acts and haven’t been taken very seriously by the British.
