The world is made of many races, cultures, traditions, beliefs, and values. America is considered to be a mixture of all those characteristics that define a person. However, in today’s world those characteristics combined and people who create North America define what America is all about reaching and the American dream. This dream is living a prosperous life by initiating a new beginning in moving forward to the ideal happiness of each individual reaching their goals and helping America be described as what it was meant to be the promised land of new beginnings. Nonetheless, for some races and genders, this was not the case especially during 1950’s to 1960’s because sexism and racism still existed. For instance, when some people in Pleasantville started to find their true color, figuratively and literally, others were in denial about what was occurring. The opposing party even wanted to take charge and put things back in order. A similar situation is when Betty, Pat’s mother, wants to feel wanted even though she was not meant to feel that way. She then realizes that she does not want to be stuck in the kitchen serving her husband and visitors. Eventually, she finds her true color/self and acts upon it. The Cruelty here is sexism of people thinking that other individuals, like Betty should be in the kitchen preparing dinner and serving the husband as he comes home from work, or should be doing any other job or task based on gender. There was another example of sexism when some guys from Pat’s school told his girlfriend that she could “go cook all the cookies for them any time.” This example shows how sexism and even some harassment is pointed out in the film, since in the perfect Pleasantville life those cookies were meant for those guys. Such cruelty can be easily seen because those guys did not know how to react to such sudden change. This unity like in Selma informs others that the connection among people cannot be broken. A bond has been made, and that bond can overcome greater human power. However, why did people have to wait until blood was spread and harm was made to create that human unity to stand up for what is right. People are taught as a child to know right from wrong yet; they are blinded by the unwanted change. The unity that has been formed allowed people to open up to new possibilities and has led to the American world today. Now has the overall message been delivered, that just depends on the person and their personal feelings of the “isms” of sex and race. In todays world this is still present not to the degree that lives have to be taken every time someone speaks up, but to the extent that people are still being judged by their color, race, nationality, and not by the person
