The Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is Edwards preaching to puritan people. The people are starting to not do what they are supposed to do, and Edwards knows that if they keep doing that it will sooner or later catch up to them and it won't end up good. Edwards uses strong tone and sounding mean so they would take him serious, ethos for credibility,logos to create an argument against theirs, imagery to create a better picture, and metaphors, to try to get the puritan people to change the way they are acting. Edwards uses ethos because he is a priest so people are going to listen to him. Priest are well educated about god and more, so they wouldn't be smart if they didn't listen to what he has to say. He knows that if an ordinary person would tell the them the same thing they wouldn't listen because they don't know if he is actually educated or not. Edwards also uses logos when writing this. An example of when he uses logos is when he says “without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood.” When he says this Edwards is creating the argument that God is giving them a second chance by keeping the arrow from being made drunk with your blood. …show more content…

If he did not use a strong tone then the puritans wouldn't think he was being serious and they wouldn't listen to them. Anyone who doesn't speak with a loud tone doesn't sound confident with what they are saying. An example of when Edwards uses a strong tone is when he says “ You have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment.” What he is saying is that they took him for granted, and he does nothing but save them.
