Argument Paragraph In the story, “Lamb to the Slaughter” I believe that Mrs. Maloney should be charged with “guilty by reason of insanity” for killing her husband. This is shown when her husband came home and told her that due to work reasons they had to divorce. This caused Mrs. Maloney to start suffering from a mental illness called anxiety disorder and killed him. This was because she was so overwhelmed from this news and also because she was pregnant.
Upon returning to the Maloney residence she acted as a distraught wife who had just found her dead husband. Mary Maloney then continued to cook dinner after the officers arrived, she told them it would calm her down, when in reality she was cooking the murder weapon. Mary Maloney does not stop there, she then begs the officers at the scene to eat the leg of lamb, telling them it would be doing her a favor. “ ‘Please,” she begged.
At the beginning of the novel, Winston was different compared to how he was before he met Julia. All Winston was trying to do was trying to survive, write his hate towards Big Brother and The Party in his diary and had his health issues. At the beginning, he is trying to survive in this circle. Winston was very negative filled and with doubts.

“Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl displays a specific type of irony, which is Dramatic irony in this short story. This irony is when a reader is more aware of what is occurring than the characters are. Throughout the text, this irony demonstrates the actions of Mrs.Mary Maloney the wife of Patrick Maloney. The policemen who were helping his wife find evidence of this incident, ended up eating the proof of the murdered that his own wife commited. For example, Mrs.Mary Maloney states “Why Don’t you eat up that Lamb that’s in the oven?
In the short story, LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER, there is loads of situational irony. When the detectives come to Mrs. Maloney’s house, they say the murder weapon is right under their noses, and that it is somewhere near them. Little do they know, they are eating the murder weapon which is a piece of lamb. “She wants us to finish it. She said we ought to eat it up.”
However, Mary is not as innocent as the reader would expect. Once considered as the lamb of the story, Mary is now committing the murder her husband, ironically with a leg of lamb. Once she realizes that she killed her husband, Patrick, she immediately clears her mind,

Next, Montresor meet Fortunato at a carnival, eventually luring him into the catacombs of his home to bury Fortunato alive. Moreover, different types of irony are portrayed in this short story. Dramatic irony consists of the character in the story knowing less about his or her situation than the reader.

During the story Mary’s husband decides he wants to leave Mary after she’s already six months pregnant with her husband. Something tweaks in her head and ends his life with a leg of lamb, that she was going to cook for dinner.
Mary Maloney provides the detectives with lamb that she kills her husband, Patrick, with. When the detective declares that the murder weapon is probably right under their noses, it is ironic because the reader knows that they are eating the weapon that the detectives are seeking. Lamb to the Slaughter is an action packed short story about a wife who is let down by her husband and proceeds to kill him as an act of revenge. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.

Dramatic irony is defined as a literary device where the reader knows more about a situation than the characters in the story. The main character Ms. Maloney, a devoted and tender wife, suddenly turns into a reckless murderer as her husband tells her he wants to leave. Throughout the narrative a prominent example of dramatic irony is when the policemen eat the leg of lamb. " ‘That's why the weapon should be easy to find.’
“Beasts of England”, “Ode to Napoleon”, the sheep’s chants, revised anthem, “Animal Farm, Animal Farm” are among the most relevant songs mentioned in this allegory. All the animals at the farms sing these songs together at the same time and by commanding this, pigs evoke an atmosphere of grandeur and nobility. The animals on the farm feel satisfied when singing together because it brings them a sense of community, but the animals do not realise that the real purpose of the songs is to keep them focused on the tasks. THE USE OF IRONY AND SATIRE Orwell uses point of view in Animal Farm to create irony. The story is told from the naive point of view of the lower animals.
Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the characters do not. Dramatic and situational irony appear throughout a few of Carver’s numerous remarkable short stories. Cathedral by Raymond Carver is the story about a blind man, Robert, who visits a husband and wife in their home. One would expect the husband to be able to see more than the blind man, but ironically this is not the case. The husband who is also the narrator can physically see, but figuratively can not.
