The epic poem, The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, returning after winning the Trojan War. He braves many obstacles and Athena assists him. One of the obstacles he faces are the Cyclopes. Homer uses connotation and imagery, to convey Odysseus’ view on the Cyclopes and their civilization. Through connotation Odysseus expresses his belief that he is superior to the Cyclopes.

The exchange infuriates Polyphemus and causes Poseidon to create a sea storm in response to Polyphemus’ prayer to him to take revenge on Odysseus. Poetry for years has been renowned as a major form of expression in art and literature. A guiding example of this is Homer’s 12,000-line epic, The Odyssey. This epic tells a tale combining years to focus on the life of Odysseus, a soldier who fought in the Trojan War, and the life he lead on his journey home. Throughout his journey, Homer narrates the battles he lives through and shows how Odysseus perseveres with help from the Gods. In the above passage excerpted from Book 9, we are shown Odysseus’s encounter with a Cyclops which teaches the reader an important lesson.
Finally, he develops the character our hero of this epic, Odysseus. Homer illustrates using character, symbolism and irony to reiterate that legerdemain or trickery isn’t always used for bad. The Odyssey by Homer seems at first glance to be an ancient text, separated from the modern world. However, the problems that The Odyssey’s characters face are still very real today. One example of this is that Odysseus experiences xenophobia when visiting Phaeacia in Book 7. The Odyssey, the story of Odysseus, a valiant warrior who is trying to make his way back home from the Trojan Wars, offers great insight into the life of the ancient Greeks at the time, who were believed to be the first group of people to establish a full civilization in Greece and to actually speak the Greek language. Not only does this story tell the tale of a struggling man trying to find his way home, it also provides insight of the way that the Greek culture was ran compared to that of other species, specifically the Cyclops that Odysseus and his crew eventually runs into. The encounter between the Cyclops Polyphemus and Odysseus can be seen depicted on an ancient drinking cup, known as a Kylix, that is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.
