Good old southern hospitality, everybody loves it. What does southern hospitality describe? It describes the stereotypical southerner as a kind, respectful, gracious, person. Southern hospitality showcases how Christians should treat people. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel written by Harper Lee, the people of Maycomb exemplify southern hospitality. Calpurnia talking to Scout about criticizing Walters eating habits, the black folks giving Atticus and his family food, and Boo's actions towards the kids, these examples of southern hospitality will be displayed in this essay. Respect, considered by some to be the base for southern hospitality. Without respecting a person, people don't feel the urge to treat them in a courteous manner. In this passage Scout does not respect Walter Cunningham and calls him out for doing something differently. “But he's gone drowned his dinner in syrup,' I protested. ' He's poured it all over-' It was when Calpurnia requested my presence in the kitchen.” (24) Cal continues to inform Scout that she needs to treat her guests with respect, no matter what they do, or who they are. It shows through when Atticus helps Tom Robinson with the case and the black people of Maycomb give him a huge amount of food to help him out. “Calpurnia said, 'This was all 'round the back steps when I got here this morning. They 'preciate what you did, Mr. Finch.” (217) This displays that doing something nice will most likely gain someone's gratitude.
