Gerrymandering is drawing political boundaries so that your political party has a numerical advantage over the other party.1 An illustrative example of how to win a district through gerrymandering from a Washington Post article is on the right. Gerrymandering could concentrate opposing votes into a few districts to gain more seats for a majority in certain districts. Gerrymandering can also be used to help or hinder a certain demographic, like a political, racial, linguistic, religious or class group. For example, two terms used in gerrymandering are “packing” and “cracking”.
According to Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O 'Grady (2016), the four spheres of political action in nursing are government, workplace, professional organization, and community. These four spheres play a significant role in opportunities for nurses to get politically involve. Government sphere focuses on laws and regulations concerning nursing practice, as well as reimbursements for healthcare, and influencing local, state, and national policies (Nault, 2012). Government can also determine what health services people are eligible for at certain age, and determines who receives what type of health services.
Professional organizations uphold its members and try to improve nursing practice. Professional organizations can serve as a voice in government. There is power in numbers. A community is a group of people who either share a common interest such as church, school, or a geographic location such as a neighborhood, town or city (Mason, Gardner, & O'Grady, 2016). By participating in community outreach programs, nurses use their knowledge, skills, and experience to improve the community's health.

Work nursing leaders from three different nurses such as RNs, LPNs and RPNs are working together on some national project but there is lack of comfortable and productive inter-dependent relationship. The group is not comfortable for a number of reasons. The major reason behind this one is the unequal numbers and powers within these three nurses groups. Due to higher in numbers (246,000) RNs can overrule the needs and concern of LPNs and RPNs. As RPN leaders like Manitoba’s Annette Osted and Marg Synshyn mentioned that context of any dialogue give the importance to the higher number of nurses.
Common Interest. The use of labor as a means of consequence initially began in sixteenth century England as part of the social transformations associated with the emergence of capitalism. (LeBaron, 2012, p.330). This concept began from the defining of social classes by wealth. The rich became richer and the poor became poorer.
An interest group will likely spend more time on non-lobbying activities than it will on active lobbying. One of the most important non-lobbying activities is securing funding for the group which can happen in a diversity of ways. The four most basic ways in which interest groups obtain founding are through: primary activity, procuring patron support, recruiting members, and by soliciting money or by selling goods/services. Primary activity refers to the idea that interest groups will gain money by doing the activities that they are already supposed to do. An example of a primary activity could be a reception or banquet hall event, where members will go to network and discuss their ideas, but at the same time they will be charge an admission
Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.
I am responsible for coordinating setting up modules for different complex nursing procedures for nurses reviews, informing nurses of upcoming educational conferences and posting articles pertaining to critical-care evidence based practice. I strongly believe that The George Washington University will afford me the opportunity to enhance my career goals and leadership
According to Shilton’s Advocacy Model, it is important to identify the evidence sources that will support the model and ensure that it remains on course to achieving the objectives. In health care advocacy, lobbying is one of the strategies applied in supporting the sources of information for a strategy (Hansen-Turtonet et al., 2010). As a result, some of the sources of information that will apply in the strategy include the government websites that list the importance of nurse-managed health centers and why they need community support. In using the lobbying method to advocate for the support of the nurse-managed health centers, we will enforce the message to all the stakeholders and the community in
Over time, American Government systems have had to deal with the uprising of new concepts and ideas to better represent the American People. This has given rise to many different Interest Groups all trying to compete for the government’s attention in order to bring more opinions to the forefront of debate. As these interest groups have grown and prospered, they have gained power in the political arena, even more so than the American people working individually to achieve the very same goals. One example of an Interest group would be Western Wolves, who work to form an understanding between Wildlife Activists and the ranchers whose property are destroyed by these protected animals. On Sun Ranch in Montana, shooting wolves and other dangerous
I am passionate about advocacy. As a nurse and officer, I must often advocate for my patients and the soldiers who serve under my leadership because I recognize keeping them at the center will improve overall outcomes, satisfaction and morale. Despite the challenges and push back I may encounter as an advocate, it is my responsibility to the patient and soldier. The competencies acquired with this specialty will mature my advocacy. Additionally, I will be
Nursing has never been simple or easy, nor is serving as a patient advocate. However, it is important to include advocacy as a part of nursing. Advocacy is standing up for the rights of all individuals and must include interpersonal relationships between nurses, patients, professional colleagues, and the public. Nightingale’s experiences in nursing demonstrated to her the value of advocating for nurses and patients.
My interests in these two areas stem from the fact that I have worked in homecare before becoming a nurse and have seen how disenfranchised the elderly population can be. I hope to be one of the voices that can further advocate for them. I am from an island where healthcare is deficient in many areas due to the lack of medical manpower and supplies available which often lead to serious consequences. There are many areas like this around the world that could benefit from competent nursing practices. In addition to providing my services as a nurse, I am very dedicated to my immediate family, which consists of myself, my husband, and two sons.
