Have you ever been discriminated because of your race? Well, if you think you haven’t, then you probably have. This is what is known as a stereotype. There are two types of stereotypes, negative and positive. Stereotypes can apply to any race, gender, age, etc. People can be impacted negatively by stereotypes and can leave them sad or offended. Stereotypes can change what you think about that person from who they really are. I believe that stereotypes are negative and unhealthy for an environment of diverse people. Stereotypes can affect people’s performance inside and outside of school. For example, Sociologist Min-Hsuing Huang conducted research on weather if the person’s race that is questioning affects the survey taker. Sociologist Min-Hsuing Huang found out that black people scored lower than the white people when be questioned by a white person. In particular, if you are asian, then you are good at math. This stereotype isn’t exactly negative, but the stereotype will turn negative if the asian isn’t smart. Aaron Kay, a psychologist at Duke University says, “A lot of positive stereotypes are tied to negative ones.” Therefore if an asian isn’t good at math, then people will think they aren’t asian and smart. While this may be true, someone could say that if people expect the asian to be smart, then the asian will be pressured into working and studying more. Well, if the asian is unable to do that and live up to that stereotype, then he/she will think of themselves as failures and everyone else around them.
