People drive down the road using their phones trying to figure out where you need to turn next daily. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, he talks about a futuristic society in which firemen burn books for a living instead of putting them out. They may not realize it, but everyone uses some type of technology in their everyday lives without thinking twice. He made a point to show how technology can affect so many people. In this book, Montag, the main character, is described as a perfect firemen. He soon learns that technology is ruining his life and it wasn’t just because he had to burn books for a living. The Seashells are like headphones for them and Mildred is obsessed with them. Near the beginning of Montag’s journey he observes that Mildred listens to “far people in far places”(Bradbury 43) more than him. He asks himself “ why didn’t he buy himself an audio-seashell broadcasting station and talk to his wife…[but] what could he say?” (43). Montag came to the conclusion that he knows nothing about his wife not even where or how they met just after being with her for ten years. He wonders why he can’t remember and begins to dig deep inside of himself and realizes”if she dies…[I] don’t think i’ll feel sad”(155). How could he love her if she is always listening to someone or something else besides him. Mildred doesn’t know what to say when he tries to talk to her she simply goes back to listening to her Seashell without answering him or his questions. They do not talk to each other like a normal human being would do but what’s normal about being obsessed with someone else’s life many miles away.
