Throughout this novel, there are many periods in time where a person can be represented as a mockingbird, including Tom Robinson. When Jem and Scout receive airguns as gifts for Christmas, Atticus warns them “Shoot all the bluejays you want, but it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”. The mockingbird can be portrayed as an innocent and fragile songbird that symbolizes innocence but is killed by men, just as Tom Robinson was innocent and caused no harm to society, but was still treated unfairly and imprisoned, ultimately leading to his death by a man.
