In the critically acclaimed novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, it is set in the Great Depression time and a time of extreme racism in the South; a Man named Tom Robinson is convicted of the rape of Mayella Ewell. With that to show, Tom Robinson is innocent because of certain evidence from the novel. In the first place, Tom is black. He would have helped a white woman with whatever she needed to because that’s what he did. When he is in court he states to the “Naw suh, another one,Most as tall as the room. When Scout sees Tom stand up, she noticed that his left arm is shorter than the other arm. She asks Reverend Sykes to tell her what is wrong with his arm; so he explains “He got it caught in a cotton gin, caught it in Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s cotton gin when he was a boy…like to bled to death...tore all the muscles loose from his bones-” (pg. 249). By saying this, he is right handed and the evidence brought up says that he choked her with both hands.
