Transcendentalism
The Transcendentalists were the great innovators of their time. They led the way with their simplistic viewpoints on life and how life should be lived. Many of them were upset by the ignorance of people who were frivolous when it came to the nature they were surrounded by. In Emerson’s Nature he vocalizes, “The sky is less grand as it shuts down over less worth in the population” (Emerson pg 2). As time goes by, people start to lose sight of nature and forget how connected they are to it. The Transcendentalists wanted to invoke a space where everyone felt attached to nature because humans are beginning to forget nature’s true beauty. Another point made in Nature was, “To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society” (Emerson pg 1). Even though the Transcendentalists were about solitude and solemness, they created quite a disruption by involving themselves in civil disobedience. They impacted human law and a person’s ability to do what they feel is right. “A higher law than civil law demands the obedience of the individual,” (Wertz 4). The Transcendentals believed that if there is a reason to not follow the rules then they were going to do just that. “Overall, the principle of non-conformity serves as the backbone for individualism and other tenets of transcendentalism by providing the rulings for a strong sense of originality and individuality,” (Wertz 7). They believed in nonconformity which was another impact on society that gave people a chance to stand up for their thoughts and opinions.
