During the 1830s, an intellectual movement took place called Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is the idea that an individual is the center of the universe and is more powerful than any institution. This way of thinking was very new to the people during that time. Even though the movement took place well over one hundred years ago, traits of Transcendentalism are still abundant in society today. For example, the movie Wall-E contains many traits of Transcendentalism.
Transcendentalism is a major romantic movement during the 19th century. It was a period of romance where people learned to love themselves. The poem Self-Reliance, is by Ralph Waldo Emerson. In this excerpt, he emphasizes the traits of being a transcendentalist. The selection Tia Chucha, is by Luis Rodriguez.

The philosophical idea of Transcendentalism
Transcendentalism is commonly seen everywhere. It can be seen in pieces of literature, in plays like The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail, and even in speeches from famous leaders like “ A Time for Choosing” by Ronald Reagan. Transcendentalism is a different way of thinking in which you focus on yourself rather than society. As a transcendentalist, you focus on simplifying your life, being confident in yourself, and not conforming or listening to society. You focus on the importance of nature and believe in a higher power.
Outsiders The Essay In The Outsiders, people think all greasers are tough and need no support, but for Ponyboy it is quite the opposite. S.E Hinton's novel, The Outsiders is a book about social class division in the 60’s between two groups, the Socs in the west (The Wealthy) and the Greasers in the east (The “Hoods”) that seek violence on each other because they want things that they don’t have. The Socs and greasers each have their own problems which contributes to why they fight. The main character, Ponyboy, who is a greaser, and his story of struggles lies within trying to do well in school and support his gang.
Transcendentalism is one of the most influential fundamentals of man-kind. Transcendentalism is the enjoyment of nature, surpassing yourself to find a greater purpose, and connecting with the Oversoul. In the movie Dead Poet’s Society, one of the professors believed education was meant for teaching people to think for themselves; he believed that if you can’t think for yourself, then you’re not truly living your life, you’re living someone else’s. The man in question was English Professor John Keating. Keating was a true free thinker, he pushed his students to think for themselves.
Transcendentalism is a belief in a higher reality, knowledge, and an experience that is only achieved by humans. Also, it suggests that every individual is capable of discovering their higher truth. One way to figure this is by non-conformity which means that they fail or refuse to follow the rules as while as with established customs, attitudes or ideas. In “Into the Wild”, “Stride Toward Freedom” and Monster Inc we can all see the trait non-conformity. “Into the Wild” is about a 24-year-old man named Christopher Johnson McCandless and how one day he decided that he had enough with society.
After the American Revolution people were inspired to create their own identity separate from England, some people wanted something different from the traditional Age of Reason. Transcendentalism is a branch of Romanticism that began in Germany, it’s beliefs are separated into three topics nature, individualism, and optimism. They believed nature is where one could reach the highest level of spirituality. Individualism is where they believed in nonconforming and rejecting society’s beliefs. Lastly optimism where beliefs that people are naturally good and they were convinced of the essential goodness of life.
The qualities of transcendentalism are the idea that people, nature, and God are interconnected, intuition leads to knowledge, and faith in the goodness of people. Transcend is the base word of Transcendentalism, meaning the process of crossing over. Transcendentalism is the process of changing yourself to become more like nature. Transcendentalism is the idea of transcendental
Transcendentalists are people who specify on the importance of individuals and they glorify nature. They are worthy of respect and believe in truth through the ability to understand something immediately. In this argument I’ll be focussing on two of the major authors of this time period. The two authors that I’ll be focusing on are Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Both of these authors discussed relationships with nature and all had a unique view on political things.
Transcendentalists were a movement of this time that had both its ups and downs. In other words failure and successes. When it comes to reform movements the things most people really care about is the success of it and if it made any real change to people during the time period. Transcendentalism had an effect on people of the time that really started something completely unheard of and misunderstood. What transcendentalists did was take what was known and look far beyond it.
The transcendentalists thought that individuality and self-reliance was true. For example Emerson says in his essay from self-reliance to “speak your latent conviction and it shall be the universal sense”. This means that you need to stop holding what you are holding back from saying and just say what you want to say. Theses song help represent that.
What I did not know before I started researching transcendentalism is the connection between the individual and nature. There are over 100 different types of species of roses. Normally you would categorize a rose as a flower; which is scientifically true. But looking through the eyes of a transcendentalist they see the rose as an individual; not focusing on the roses as a group but as one. Each rose symbolizes something unique and different.
