Transformation of Jonas and Truman Burbank In the dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and the dystopian fiction movie “The Truman Show” both Jonas and Truman changed from being oblivious and obedient to aware and rebellious in their respective communities. One event that brought about the change in Jonas was when he watched the video of his father releasing the twin baby. J . Prior to the Ceremony of 12, Jonas volunteered at the House of the Old and bathed Larissa. They discussed the release of another elderly man named Roberto. As the text states”’This Morning we celebrated the release of Roberto,’ she told him. ‘It was wonderful’” (39). Later “Jonas grinned. ‘I wish I’d been there to see it’” (41). As he is learning new things, he becomes curious about the truth behind release. The Giver made Jonas watch the video of his father releasing the twin baby and Jonas was shocked to see what happened. As the text states “‘ I won’t! I won’t go home! You can't make me!’ Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded the bed with his fists”(190). In the beginning of the novel, Jonas thinks that release is good and he doesn’t have anything against it. He speaks about it in a positive way while bathing Larissa. They say that release is celebrated for the elderly and they say this in the context of Roberto who was released that morning. Multiple events happen that help Jonas open his eyes and realize that release is death and that The Committee of Elders are literally killing people. He doesn’t know that he is living in a set and he is very happy with his life as he goes to greet his neighbor. When Truman walks outside, he sees a stage light fall from the sky but doesn’t think much of it, he just leaves the light where it is and doesn’t question where it came from. He doesn’t seem to recognize this event as very suspicious. Later in the movie, after mounting suspicions, Truman tries to drive out of the city in search of Fiji, but he comes across a nuclear power plant that has broken down. Truman asks the officer if there was any other way to get around and leave town and as he asks this, the officer calls Truman by his name even though Truman never told him what his name was. This causes Truman to get out of his car andrun around the power plant. However, he is stopped by a crew of workers. In the beginning of the novel Truman is very clueless when odd events happen. Truman does not know what is going on when he sees the stage light fall from the sky. He thinks that these events are just random things that are happening and he has no clue that he is living in a fake world. All these things don’t seem to affect him as he goes on with his life. However, after being called by name at the power plant, Truman becomes more aware of his surroundings and the people around him. As a result, he
