For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
Even now people are expected to act a certain way. They are expected to use common sense and good manners. However, these expectations differ between cultures and ethnicities. For example, social behaviors in a small town, like Maycomb, would differ from behaviors in a bigger city, like Baltimore. Interests could be different as well.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. In the 1970s, the drinking age had been lowered to 18, in all 50 states, due to demand and influence by other states. This had increased the drunk driving rate by 30% and during this time, it caused the highest drunk driving accidents in a lot of the American history (Issues & Controversies). This isn’t something that needs or wants to be repeated by lowering the drinking age once again. To start, one reason to not lower the drinking age is it could increase the chances of drug use. If the MLDA was lowered from 21 to 18 it would cause people to irresponsibly drink in nightclubs, not be as safe when in this environment, and could also easily increase the risk of drug use (Procon).
Anona Su Throughout, we have talked about many types of deviant behaviors ranging from adult-child sexual contact and bestiality to white supremacy beliefs and deaf community. Goffman argued that no matter the stigma experienced, it is extremely discrediting because of language and relationships around the people it affects (1963). Deviant behaviors and characteristics (denoted as: b/c) are highly stigmatized thus discrediting. To combat stigma, groups can be made. Yet, there are many instances where they are unable to form communities of support.
Social norms are rules that have been ingrained in society and people for hundreds of years. These societal rules can be anything from not talking to strangers on the subway to wearing weather appropriate clothes in public. Yet, when these societal norms are broken, the observers, as well as the person who destroyed the norm, are affected. Societal norms play in large role in how a person conducts him or herself when interacting with others. When deciding what social interaction, I would break, I wanted to do something that would be easy for me to fully commit to without facing too much embarrassment.

There are many times when I have been in situations where I could think sociological, but I did not until my first sociology class, which happens to be this one. Because of this, I have reflected on situations and circumstances from the past and concurring everyday life. These examples include being on an elevator, coming to college and meeting new people, having interviews with people of higher power, watching movies, such as The Breakfast Club, Sociologically, norms can be defined as shared expectations or unwritten rules. They can be Mores, which is right versus wrong, or Folkways, meaning polite versus rude. Norms govern behavior, collective, and includes sanctions.
When facing a new stage of your life, new people appear, and like everyone, you want to make a good first impression, and that is when good manners come in, the way to treat people, the way you talk to them and how you act in front of someone says a lot about yourself. In my family, good manners are everything, you have to be respectful to everyone even if they are being rude to you, I grew up knowing that you have to give without expecting to receive something back, not only things or objects, also words and actions, I have always been aware that respect is your best first and last impression, your manners are what builds you as a person and that is what I have been practicing them all my life, those were the values given to me, and I will keep them. I believe that having good manners makes you feel even better about yourself, it opens doors to new opportunities, new people with the same values as mine, that are going to rely on me because of their trust, because they will know what I’m made up of.
