Violence is behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Shirley Jackson conveys violence in “The Lottery” when Tessie Hutchinson is stoned by the people of the village. The first hint of violence comes early in the story. For example, some of the boys of the village “made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square” in preparation for what is to come (Jackson, 1). Strangely the men act like it’s a normal day. However, they gather “away from the pile of stones in the corner” probably because they know what they represent (Jackson, 1). The children are uneasy at first, but eventually start playing.
