Is it possible a person to be embraced in something and this embracement make actually distancing this person from this thing? Yes, it is possible when the person is pretending embracement in something. When the person has other motives to embrace, other than honest and true desire. This is exactly what happens to Wangero a character of Everyday Use by Alice Walker. Wangero in embracing her heritage she is actually distancing from it. There is a reason why she is distancing from it when she is trying to embrace it. The reason is Wangero herself and her behavior. Even thou she says she respects to them and calls others to do same, her behavior shows that she herself is not respectful toward them. Respect toward ancestry starts from the respect of family, if person does not respect family which is first stage of ancestry this person will not be able to respect ancestries. This is what Wangero does, her behavior shows that she does not respect her family, and she is always trying to show them that she is more educated and she is on a higher level. As her mom shows that Wangero did now show her respect towered her family and says “She used to read to us without a pity, she washed us in a river of make believes, burnt us with a lot knowledge we did not necessarily need to know”. Besides showing to her family that they are on a lower level than her there are many things in her behavior that shows she does not really appreciate or respect her heritage. For example she has changed her name from Dee to Wanger. Her name was part of her ancestries because she was named after her Aunt and it was tradition in family to pass the name, but Dee changed her name and was called Wangero.
