The Primary theme of the Great Gatsby is waste. It shows the things that these characters go through to live the american dream. Living the american dream brings lots of waste. This novel shows and gives examples of waste and how the characters waste their time and life. In this novel the characters waste their time in useless pursuits. The setting depicts waste through the valley of ashes and the working class. This novel also shows how the pursuit of money does not bring happiness, at least not for and extended amount of time. Many of these character come to find out how living the american dream is not as easy and luxury as it seems. Gatsby and Tom will soon learn that it's not all about money and living the american dream. For gatsby it ends a little different than he hoped and expected and for Tom it ended hard but not as unexpected as gatsby’s ending. In this novel people waste their time and life on useless pursuits. One example is the time that Tom and Gatsby spend partying for no apparent reason. Every night they party weather there is a special occasion or not. Another way that Gatsby shows how to waste a life and time is how he bought his house and had all those parties just for this girl that he in the end wouldn’t even be with. It shows the working class of people and how they are living the life by the dollar they make a day. Surrounding the valley of ashes is the wealthy people. For example on one side of the valley is gatsby and his mansion of waste. On the other side is Tom with his big mansion and all his horses. Just the setting show how much of a waste gatsby made his life. It really points out that he spent his life spending on this girl that he possibly couldn’t have even met up with again in his life.
