Asian vs. Western Parents Mothers from most ways of life want to protect and raise their offspring. However, many cultures have very distinctive ways of bringing up their young. Some lifestyles believe that being strict on the child is the best way for them. In other parts of the world, they suspect the child should be cared for and be rewarded for all the positive characteristics they have developed. Generally, Asians are stereotyped as mean and strict. While westerners are more kind. In Amy Chua’s essay, “Excerpt from Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” Asian and Western mothers have different expectations, determination, and care of the children.
Firstly, Asian culture have higher expectations of their descendents. Asians set standards for their children instead of them creating their own. They want them to be successful and be able to accomplish their goal. Asians will strive to get their child the best grades in school by tutoring them and forcing them to study against their will. Chua wanted her daughter to play a song on the piano but her daughter was not able to. Chua explains “Lulu couldn’t do it. We worked on it nonstop for a week, drilling each of her hands separately, over and over” (308). Chua, like many other Asian mothers, forced her child to play the piano for weeks. She was made to study the music sheet like other children are forced to study for tests. She decided to tutor Lulu and make her practice more until she was able to play it. Many other Asian parents also start tutoring their child if they do not improve in their classes. Westerners do not force their teenagers to play piano or any other activities.
