Many types of things were affecting African-American families during the Civil War. Did the families get to stay together? How did it change or affect African-American families during the civil war. What were some of the differences in the way African Americans were treated in the North VS how they were treated in the South? What was happening with African-American families during the civil war?
A common misconception of the Civil War is that when it was finally over, people think that all the African Americans were immediately freed and they lived happily for the rest of their lives. Well, that is not quite accurate, as there were many things that had occurred during the time right after the American Civil War, known as the Reconstruction Era. This includes the the numerous laws and institutions that were put forth to help African Americans, such as the Reconstruction amendments. Many white Americans, especially those from the south, had opposed the idea of giving blacks the same opportunities and rights as they were given.

During the time period of 1860 through 1877, there were horrid events that occurred. The North and the South states had an ongoing feud. They were feuding over the problems of slavery, and whether or not it should be a continued tradition. In 1861 through 1865 a massive event took place, the Civil War, where Abraham Lincoln was the face and figure of that time. This was without a doubt Americans fighting against fellow Americans.
“I saw over twelve colored men and women, beat, shot and hung between there and Shreveport,” former slave Henry Adams writes. After the Civil War, the legal institution of slavery was abolished unless used as a just punishment. Additionally, these “freedmen” were naturalized and made citizens of the United States which allegedly granted them equal protections, whatever color or race, would have; and, they were granted black male suffrage. Some may argue that African Americans were free after the Civil War for the obvious reasons of a document stating so. However, African Americans were not free post-Antebellum era because they were deprived of their rights as “Americans citizens” through the institution Black Codes and the continuation of
African Americans had an extremely pivotal role in the outcome and consequences of the Civil War. This group of people were enslaved, and forced to work in horrible conditions, for the whole day, without pay. Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. The issue of Slavery, which resulted in the eventual economic and social division between the North and South, caused the creation of the Confederate States. African Americans did not only unintentionally cause the war, but they also effected the outcome of the war, and the eventual consequences the nation would face after the war.
During the reconstruction phase after the Civil War Southerners and Northerners treated blacks different in many ways and similar in some ways as well. Many of the black began to leave the south in 1877 after the Nicodemus community was created originating in Kentucky. When many of african americans began to migrate to the North many of the Southern slave owners and master’s gave their slaves the option to stay and work for pay and housing instead of just as slaves, this was because at the time agriculture and the practice of farming was the main way for people during the time to have a source of income and bring food to the table. Many african american’s left because of how they were treated by their master’s. Some in which chose to stay
The shift in industry also allowed some African American’s from the south to move towards cities and receive jobs. Of course, they still suffered from high prejudice, the percentage of black workers jumped from 3% to 8% by the end of the war. Although they did have segregated divisions, Blacks were also allowed to join the army and fight for their country. Even Native Americans experienced a great change during the war. Most of their numbers joined the army and were allowed to fight in unsegregated
Life was worse for African-Americans after the Civil War for numerous reasons. There were the legal actions that the Southern whites took. There was also the KKK and the Election of 1876. To begin with, the Southern whites took legal actions against the African-Americans. They created the Jim Crow Laws.
They had many more rights than they had before however they still experienced a large amount of hate. African Americans migrated during the Great Migration due to poor living conditions and treatment in the Southeast of the United States (Phillips 33) . “For many blacks, their departure from the South was a response to, and a defiance of, the coercions used to keep them bound to segregation” (Phillips 39). In the 1920’s, treatment of African Americans was different, blacks were able to do more such as getting a job however, some felt as though the hate they would get for it wasn 't worth it. Although, there would always be challenges that African Americans would have to face such as landowners supporting the passing of laws meant to control the mobility of blacks, limit their wages, and minimize their chance to purchase and own land (Phillips 33).
The Civil War and the period of Reconstruction brought significant political, social, and economic changes to American society, and these effects continued into the 20th century. Reconstruction Had Long Effects On African Americans In the mid-19th century, most black people in the South were slaves, and they were treated like goods. They were discriminated, were punished because of disobedience, and were not protected by the laws.(Treatment of Slaves, 2016) Since the American Civil War broke out-- a war fought between the northern Unions and the southern Confederates--the United States had unprecedented costs in the history. When the Civil War ended, parts of the South lay in ruins--homes were burned, businesses were closed, many properties were abandoned.
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
the Holocaust. African Americans and Jews have both been oppressed for centuries. Oppression for the African Americans started when europeans brought them to America for cheap labor. Oppression for the jews started when Hitler came into power and took away Jews rights. As I started to study the two groups, I realized that African-Americans and Jews have many similarities, but they also have many differences.

This is especially significant for children, who, as they grow up commonly lose sight of their creativity.
