Explain How Much Water Is Equal To The Amount Of Sodium In Potato Cells

519 Words3 Pages

The lab will be focusing on finding how much sodium in the water is equal to the amount of sodium in the potato cell. Sodium is a mineral found naturally in many foods, including fruits and vegetables. Your body needs some sodium to balance the amount of water in your cells and stimulate the production of nerve impulses and muscle contractions (HealthyEating.sfagte). An average potato weighs around 213 grams, and is a vegetable which is rare in sodium. About 1-3 percent of the potato is considered pure sodium which can also be a positive aspect to this experiment, knowing the fact that sodium is one of the solutes in an average potato. The average potato has about 13mg of sodium, this is a fairly small amount compared to the whole potato since …show more content…

This can be seen through the pH scale, since the pH scale is from 1-14 1 being acidic and 14 being alkaline. Some may think that salt can massively effect the Ph of the water. However, It depends upon the pH of the water into which the salt is being introduced. Chemically speaking, salt is a base compound, falling smack in the center of the acid-alkaline spectrum. If introduced to water which has a high pH, the pH might be lowered incrementally toward the center of the pH spectrum. If the water had a very low pH, making it very acidic, the salt would increase the pH toward the center of the spectrum (Sciencing.com). Connecting back to our experiment we should use water with a pH level of 7 which is considered neutral water backing up the fact that it has little to no sodium. This experiment is connecting to the pH scale because if I used water of a pH of 3 then for my next trial I use water of the pH 8 I would not have controlled data and to conclude there will not be any isotonic solution with a base percentage as a final answer. Therefore, we must use the same pH leveled water in order for the amount of salt to stay controlled throughout the whole
