Describe your experience working directly with college students in individual and group settings.
As a senior consultant at the University Writing Center, Texas A&M, I have provided academic advice to over 350 students from all disciplines individually and in group-settings. Generally, I adopt developmental advising philosophy when counseling students. In a one-on-one session, I serve as a co-learner with active listening. I share the responsibility with students in identifying issues by asking open-ended questions, and collaboratively we create feasible solutions, and then I offer learning skills and educational resources so that they can become independent, lifelong learners. In group-settings, I establish various discussion rules to create a safe, peer-learning space before addressing students’ issues.
