The Destruction of the American Dream The American Dream for many individuals, is a goal. Some achieve it, others result in failure. So what is the American Dream and why does it seem so appealing to the average person? The American Dream is the idea that anyone can work hard and achieve wealth and success in America.
Stock markets minted millionaires by the thousands because of the booming economy. Young Americans in the 1920’s living in the cities rejected traditional social norms by embracing a modern urban culture of freedom. People in the 1920’s drank illegally against prohibition and attended huge parties hosted by the richest of society. The novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in West Egg, Long Island, New York in the 1920’s. The narrator, Nick Carraway, moves east from the Mid-West to the exciting New York City to be involved in stocks.
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many important themes that help develop the meaning of the work as a whole. The most important and relevant theme throughout the novel would be the American dream. Jay Gatsby born as James Gatz came from a midwestern family that wasn't wealthy. Gatsby came into his own money which made him West Egg (pg. 98). When he was a soldier he met Daisy and that is when he wanted to be rich and have a lavish lifestyle because he liked Daisy and she was born into money.
The American dream is something that every American hopes and dreams of. The Great Gatsby, a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, shows the different aspects of the American dream. Jay Gatsby, the book’s main character, falls deep into his own personal Dream. This Dream happens to be his love for Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby is so blinded by his love for Daisy he doesn’t even see the problems that he is causing.

Baz Luhrmann’s film, The Great Gatsby, reveals a world where people have no hope of improving their situation in life, for though the American Dream promises great opportunities, there are few chances for the characters to realise their ambition. However, the decadence of the 1920s makes for a world where the hope for a better life sustains people as they endure lives of greed, frustration and shattered dreams. The era of the roaring twenties created an illusion for many people that they could create a better life for themselves. Luhrmann affirms this through flashbacks of Gatsby’s life who before he met Daisy, was working-class and “dirt poor” but never accepted his life, as he believed he was “destined for future glory”.
