Over 5 million women are wage workers in the US and their health and safety is in danger due to the terrible environment they have to work in (“Votes For Women”). This was one of the many reasons that women wanted to become equal to men and have the overall outcome of being able to vote, just like men can. The 3 main tactics that were used to help women earn the right to vote include solidarity, organization, and publicity. To begin with, solidarity is vital when it comes to wanting something done. Solidarity is when people work in a unified way, as well as showing support by doing the same thing. Alice Paul is sent to prison for picketing the White House. Organization can help people plan precisely when and where they want things to happen. When organizing, timing is crucial. That is why when the suffragists planned to have a parade, they planned to do it the day when President Woodrow Wilson came in. In this parade, the goal was to get publicity, and boy, did they (van Garnier). Another example of when organization was crucial was when Anthony decided to vote, she wanted to bring her family as well. All these family members were also women. She was also trying to get some publicity in the newspapers, which would help get her message out (One Woman, One Vote). Both of these are examples of why organization is important because without organization, the plan to get so much publicity could never work, because there would be a chance that no one would see the parade. Also, if Anthony didn’t plan to bring all of her female family members, then the message she was trying to send out wouldn’t be as vital as it was. Publicity can come from newspapers, and it can come from events that catch the reporters attention. One event that did catch the reporters’ attention was when Alice Paul was being force fed, and the police woman in charge slipped her a piece of paper in the jail, and when she wrote on that said paper, the police lady sent it to someone, where it caught the attention of reporters (van Garnier). Another instance would be when Anthony was trialed, and she wasn’t allowed to be a witness to her own case, which is by law allowed. This did in fact catch the reporters’ attention and some even wrote in the newspapers that it was nuts (One Woman, One Vote). Both of these incidents show how important publicity is because they both show unjustly how women are being treated. So if the newspapers hear about these ridiculous things, then it will make the reporters want to join in on the fight for women's suffrage, adding more people to the cause of
