The Civil War was a major turning point in the history of the United States. The Civil War started because President Lincoln wanted to keep a union, but what they were fighting for shortly changed. The war wasn't really about union, now it was about slaves, Lincoln wanted to get rid of them and the south wanted to keep them. A common explanation of why the Civil War was fought if because of the moral issue of slavery. A key issue was state rights. The Southern states wanted to assert their authority over the federal government so they could abolish federal laws they didn't support, mostly the laws regarding slavery.
