Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?
The curriculum at University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts seems to be a good fit for me for many reasons. First, LSA has a strong emphasis on undergraduate research through the honors program. As I am interested in neuroscience and biology, LSA offers me a basis through which I can get research opportunities by participating in honors. Chien-Shiung Wu’s work to overturn the law of parity, though the credit went to male physicists, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang, who went on to win a Nobel Prize. Jocelyn Bell Burnell’s discovery of pulsars, though the credit went to her supervisor, Antony Hewish, who went on to win a Nobel Prize. Throughout the world and throughout history, science has been a male-dominated field, in which many female accomplishments are not given the credit they rightfully deserve. As someone interested in going into a science field, I think it is important to believe that I have the ability to achieve the same things as a man, even though society and history may not agree. Despite women being a minority in science-related fields, I think that it’s important that more women follow their passion for science. For this reason, I mentor local elementary school girls who are interested science, technology, engineering and math, through a program called Girls in Science. Every week, we meet with a group of 17 young girls to teach them about different aspects of science and how women in science have succeeded, despite being discriminated against in the past, while fostering their interest in pursuing STEM-related
