Because of safety concerns, many states have increased the age at which teens can begin to drive. Currently a teenager is required to be fifteen years and six months old to acquire a learner’s permit and sixteen years and three months old to acquire his or her license. Some adults believe teenagers are immature and not responsible. However, many teens have matured by the age of sixteen. The age requirement should not be raised from 16 to 18 because many individuals must be able to commute on their own, many individuals have family members who need to be driven places, and many individuals participate in activities that require them to be places at specific times. Individuals must be able to commute on their own in today's society. Many students under eighteen have jobs their parents require them to have. Without being able to drive, their parents would either have to drive them to and from work, or not allow their children to have jobs. Without a job, students would have no source of income, forcing parents to pay for their wants and needs. If teens are working and making their own money, they can pay for things they want or need, car insurance, and even a vehicle of their own. There are many people, young and old, who have problems that do not allow them to drive. Many older people cannot get out by themselves to go to the store or the doctor. For example, if I do not have school then my mother will ask me to drive my grandmother to the doctor, so my mother does not have to miss a day of work. Also if an individual has siblings that participate in extracurricular activities, it is much easier on the parent for the older sibling to be able to take the younger siblings wherever they need to go after school. Having a child that can drive is an advantage to parents so he or she can help by taking family members places when the parents are
