“The Detroit baseball team is a pack of Tigers.” What meaning does the sentence have, and how can it have that meaning?
A sentence that aims to explain characteristics of a person or group of people typically doesn’t deviate in meaning. In the quote above, the writer explains that the members who participate or compete for the Detroit, Michigan professional baseball team, the Tigers. If this is truly the case than those who play for the San Francisco Giants reflect a cohort of Giants. One can distribute this statement into all fields of group sports; The Aquinas College running team is a groups of Saints. Though all the qualities that man gives to the tiger is not true about it, it is however the way the mind of man shapes the tiger to exist in the mind. How the tiger is understood does not change what the tiger is in real existence just in cognitional existence. This is not saying that humans cannot come to know who or what another being is, rather, depending on the complexity of a thing, it takes interaction and contemplation to know another being. So the Detroit Tigers baseball team does reflect characteristics of a pack of tigers while at the same time still being human. It is from here that it becomes related on a singular level. If when the whole team is together, they are a pack of Tigers shouldn’t that mean that one man on the team is a Tiger? Yes, not as an actual tiger but one who composes himself with similar characteristics of what a tiger is perceived to be. When this player is at practice or a game with his team, he is a part of the pack. If he thinks back to a game in which he played or the group of men are out eating together, he is still in or at least was a part of the pack. What happens to the player that gets traded or no longer acts a Detroit Tiger should?
