To begin with, I am going to question why the Ewells lie. The Ewells must feel threatened or jealous of the blacks. The first reason why the Ewells feel jealous is, they feel like people relate them to the blacks. When people talk about the Ewells, they talk about how uneducated they are. The Ewells might feel like people think they are not as smart and relate them to the blacks. During this time, blacks were considered uneducated and so were the Ewell’s. They could be afraid of being compared to the blacks, and somebody saying that they are just like the blacks. Another reason why they feel threatened by the blacks is; they want to be smarter than the blacks. As the blacks start to create their own community, they are getting access to books. Once the blacks learn how to read and write they will have an advantage over the Ewell’s. They are afraid that once the blacks become smarter, they will learn that they can outsmart the Ewell’s. When blacks get equal rights, they will be better than the Ewell’s. The Ewell’s are afraid of that because the blacks are the only people the Ewell’s are smarter than. Everyone else in the town has some sort of job and form of income except the Ewell’s. This is what racism is about, everyone wants to feel like they are better than someone else, so the whites feel like they are better than blacks. People look for the tiniest ways to feel like they are better than someone, in this case they look at skin color. The Ewell’s are threatened by the fact that the blacks are going to be smarter than them, so they lie to get them in trouble. The final reason why they feel jealous or threatened is; it seems like Atticus likes the blacks
