Imperialism is defined as a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Understanding the definition ensures you can see what the French did to the people of Indochina, and it also shows that force was used for the French to occupy the land. Going further into the history of the occupation of Indochina; explaining why the French considered Indochina a key colony will be the first topic that is considered. Followed by the resistance that the Vietnamese people did to fight the conversion, and explain the French imperial rule over Indochina up to WWI. The West being for the people did not want to have a big division or a battle of communism and democracy, and the American government and their allies felt if they could save Indochina from falling victim to a communistic form of government that would be one less country to worry about. Although, they felt that way about the spread of communism; super countries Russia and China did not want the spread of democracy to continue. Ho Chi Minh received a Western education instead of the traditional Eastern Chinese culture . However, Ho Chi Minh did not follow the path of the Western culture and pursue political focus on democracy. He fought for the freedom to be independent and to also ensure that Indochina would eventually lead to a communist party. The French did not want the people to liberated nor did they want the spread of communism because they were allies of Americans. Furthermore, with the French importing and exporting items it would ensure that their investment in the Vietnamese people would pay
