December 18, 1917 the United States Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacturing, sales, and transportation of intoxicating liquors. March 21, 1947, the United States Congress debated again over the topic of alcohol. The result was the Twenty-first Amendment being passed. Alcohol was yet again allowed and freely sold within the borders of the United States of America (Constitution). No matter the harmful effects alcohol has always been a drug that is used, abused, and loved by countless Americans.
Even though teens and young adults consume alcohol does not mean that it is a right thing to do, it can be dangerous and harmful to your body. To clarify, alcohol drinking can interfere with the development of the young adult brain. With that being said it can interfere with controlling anger, fear, and your happiness. The more permanent effects can be memory loss and weakness in your muscles and bones. In fact, lowering the drinking age would let more use of illegal drugs.
There has been many discussions all over the United States is whether they should change the drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen. Most teens will argue that they should change the age because they can go to a store or a gas station and they can buy a pack of cigarettes, a black n mild, play the lottery at the age of eighteen so they will ask so why can they not buy a beer or alcohol at the age of eighteen. Drunk driving seems to be a black spot of our civilization. An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related accidents, and drunk driving continues to be an enormously important public safety issue (MADD). With lowering this drinking age we can only expect more cases of drunk driving and more lives are put in danger. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates that about 900 lives are saved annually due to fewer alcohol-related traffic crashes involving underage drivers. Surely, it should be a priority for the society to minimize the death toll from drunk driving.
Swerves into the next lane and hits someone ? We need to crack down on the laws we have in place now, to do that we need zero tolerance from offenders under the influence . Affect harsher penalties, to send the message drunk driving is not ok. Lastly Get rid of the petty laws that let offenders off the hook and enforce the law we have now. Officials need to crack down more on sobriety check-ins, vehicle ignition –interlocks, and arrest and detainment of first time offenders.
