People need to be more informed today than ever. There is a lot of false information going around and it can be believed very easily. People will believe anything they see without question, but people have to break from that habit. Columnist German Lopez is giving all the information in a way that is able to be understood by the average citizen. Lopez achieves this through the use of appeals, punctuation, and strong diction. The author uses ethical appeal which can convey the purpose of the piece. The author refers to a business analyst by stating “It didn’t put calm back in the system” (“Bank Failure, Explained”). This bank could cause a depression because people will get worried and pull money out of their banks which will close down those banks and cause a chain reaction and move towards bigger banks. Which means it has to end when it is small before it snowballs and gets bigger and bigger. The appeal comes from using someone else who is more prominently involved in the business world to strengthen his argument. It allows the reader to fully understand the situation that is going on so that they do not have to panic and pull all of their money out of the bank. This reverts back to the purpose of giving the reader more insight to a situation that could affect them and the author gives their view on how even small banks can pose a threat to causing another depression. Another thing that caused fright in the eyes of the American population was the Covid lockdowns. People were in their homes and worried about being in their homes for a long periods of time so they panicked similar to the bank situation. People went out and bought all the toilet paper they could (which gives a false sense of security) and caused a nationwide toilet paper shortage and people had to go to multiple stores just to get a few rolls.
