Have you ever experienced unjustified criticism or vis versa judged another person solely based on predetermined stereotypes? Guilty, you have just experienced a moment of implicit bias. Implicit bias can affect how we view people based on race, gender or even age. The purpose of this essay is to clarify the meaning of implicit bias and how it is experienced in people’s daily lives. People experience implicit bias on a regular basis, whether it be at work, or school or in public. Implicit bias is having subconscious preconceived beliefs and judgements against someone, or a group that prevents objectivity. Its subconscious because it is embedded in our brains and we don’t realize we are judging someone. Its preconceived because we grow up …show more content…

There are so many stereotypes attached to these groups of people that they have become the norm. An example of a stereotype would be that Middle Eastern individuals are often referred to as terrorist without having any real knowledge of the individual other than their physical appearance. This belief is completely irrational since we are generalizing this group of people as terrorists when in fact most are not. This stereotype can cause some to feel unspoken bias towards them. Another typically example would be when you see an African American or Mexican you might assume they are dangerous and involved in illegal activities. You know it is wrong to think this and immediately dismiss the thought however it crossed your mind whether it was intentional or not. Therefore, considered as implicit bias. It has become increasingly common for Whites to also experience implicit racial bias. For instance, it is assumed by default that all whites are racist, when that is not the case.
