The internet is probably the most useful resource known to man in this day of age. Not only is the internet easy to access, it is easy to use. But could the internet ever have a negative effect on us? Certainly, it does. After a 2014 study by the British journal, “Nature” showed that more people have faith in internet content than what they have read in a book or what they have been told by someone. This shows how much our communication could be affected when everything being discussed with someone needs to be confirmed online. Now, both advises from parents and friends need to have the support of the internet before it is seen as true. This has increased illiteracy as wrong spellings now have limited importance and hand writing skills is no more needed as we will no longer need to learn how to write in order to communicate. Today’s teenagers are too busy to write in proper language and are prone to using horrific abbreviations. People now value efficiency and the ability to multitask over performing qualitative work that would effectively build our skills in writing and help us learn unabbreviated, complete words and sentences and also improve vocabulary as a whole. This has made the imparting or interchanging of thought, opinion and information by speech, writing or signs difficult thereby hindering knowledge as communication is not achieved. Also, most importantly is the vague and abstruse nature of this type of communication as against verbal and face to face communication. This could eventually result into a lot of problems as our relationships with our family, friends, co-worker and even our partners is dependent on how effectively we communicate with them. The internet way of communicating kills the transmission of messages, for the reason that the internet segregates one and another. I am sure most people would attest to the fact that it connects us with people all over the world through which people could build relationships and a community of online friends. According to Weinreich (1997), the adoption of a virtual community is detrimental because it lacks the important element of accountability and mutual obligation present in real-world communities. This is a truth many people have had to experience the hard way as they give out personal information that could be detrimental to their lives if put in wrong hands.
