Society has been fascinated by the idea of living our lives through someone else’s. As children we often idolize superheroes and celebrities, dressing up as them or mimicking their actions. We seek excitement, adventure and even fear. As technology has evolved, our imagination of being Superman or Batman are becoming more realistic with the help of devices such as the Wii, PlayStation Move, and the Xbox Kinect. We can step into surreal story lines such as Silent Hill, God of War and many others. Although we obviously can never be these created characters, we are now allowed to at least step into their shoes for a few hours through a video game console and television screen. My first personal encounter with virtual reality was in the early 2000s when I was gifted a Saban’s Power Rangers Wild Force virtual reality set. It included a head set and pair of sensor gloves that were all connected through wires. As a child, I was ecstatic that I could finally be the Red Ranger and fight against villains, playing it on a daily basis lunging punches and kicks in the middle of the living room. Looking back to that set, it was rather primitive still requiring wired connection, low resolution, and a lack of motion sensory. Even before my childhood glimpses of what virtual reality could be were demonstrated in Sega VR and Nintendo’s Virtual Boy. Today’s virtual reality has outclassed the pasts renditions of it by a tenfold, and sparked my interest back into it. As seen in other technological trends such as home gaming system, mobile phones, and laptops, it is a matter of time for virtual reality to make its true impact on technological history. Virtual reality has room to make improvements in the military sectors, the learning environment, and even the medical field. It has already been used to train military forces through simulations of airplane parachuting or combat training. As of right now, virtual reality seems as a trend of luxury and grandeur but in a few years it will become a household staple for many.
