Would you want your child to have a better experience with life than you did? Most parents when asked would want their children to have a better experience with life and to support them in every way possible. This was not the case between Troy and his son Corey in the play Fences written by August Wilson. Corey had passion and talent for football and had a rare opportunity to play college football on a scholarship. Troy constantly griped that Corey was not doing his chores because of football. Troy despised his father for many reasons including his father finding Troy with a girl he liked when he was little, then he ended up beating Troy and then raping the little girl. His relationship with his father was far from normal and did not know how to have a normal relationship with his sons. Troy wanted to make the safe or the most traditional decision. It seemed to make sense in Troy’s head just because of the way that Troy was raised, but his traditional thinking was outdated. “The only part of the world I knew was the fourty-two acres of Mr. Lubin’s land. That’s all I knew about life.”(1407) Troy had a bad example growing up and it carried directly into his life.
