Exploring the results of Racial Prejudice: The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas is a well known book in the United States of America. It is known for its perspective on racial discrimination and activism. It tells the story of a 16 year old girl, Starr, who goes through seeing her childhood best friend, Khalil, murdered by a cop for no reason. Starr attends a mostly all white school, but lives in a purely black community, creating a difficult social life and when Khalil dies it becomes even harder. Starr faces many mental conflicts navigating her way through the death of her best friend, and in the end decides to protest the unjust systems Khalil faced. Lee uses Atticus's speech to show racism that creates biased judgment. For example, in the novel, Lee shows Atticus describing the racial discrimination in their town that often leads to unfair judgment. Specifically, while in court, Atticus defended Tom Robinson, a black man wrongfully accused of rape who later fell guilty. Atticus says, “the evil assumption—that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber” (Lee 233). When Lee has Atticus comment on the evil assumptions of men, she conveys how racial prejudice creates unfair judgment.
