In the article “Power of Extreme Writing”, Diana Cruchley defines what extreme writing is and the importance behind it. Extreme Writing is a technique used to build a student’s writing fluency. Not only does Diana Cruchley build the student’s fluency with this technique, but makes writing more exciting to students. Many students do not get excited about writing, but with her methods according to the article, she makes it fun and fast.

Diana Cruchley states, “Extreme Writing gives you a way to cultivate a writing culture that requires minimal classroom time and builds both fluency and enthusiasm for a skill that is critical to academic success.” In the article, she describes three skills students need to have to be good writers. …show more content…

In Extreme Writing, grammar skills and structure are not the main focus of the assignment. The teacher introduces a topic and gives the students different prompts. The student gets to choose the prompt they want to write about. Five minutes are given to start writing in the classroom. After the five minute period, the student then takes it home for homework and has to write fifteen more minutes at home. Students are given a set amount of words they should be able to write during the time frame.

Diana Cruchley introduced a method called Rapid Write to come up with the amount of words Extreme Writing. The amount of words the students need to have are based on the student’s capability. The Rapid Write method could be considered as a race to the students.
The writing assignment begins with the student spending one minute writing about anything that comes to mind. The only catch the student has to write for the whole minute. The pencil cannot leave the paper even to think. Students count their words at the end of the minute.
After doing this several times, Diana Cruchley introduced a formula in the article to calculate how many words a student should be writing in the twenty minute period. Students should
