His most influential works came about in the early 20th century, and his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby holds the most influential take on the 1920’s and gilded-age conspicuous consumption. His lesser known novel, East of Eden, is the precursor to this work. Fitzgerald took the advice of Father Sigourney and went to college to pursue writing. Once graduated from the Newman school, F. Scott Fitzgerald made the decision to stay in New Jersey to attend college at Princeton University.
