Zach Harriman thought he knew everything about his dad. Sports fan, former football star, and advisor to the president of the United States. But that’s until the plane he was on mysteriously crashed along with everything else Zach knew about his dad, Tom Harriman. This horrendous accident lead Zach to not only figure himself out, but to discover new things about his dad. In the book Hero by Mike Lupica, Zach Harriman proves how strong, independent, and reliable he is.

Usually, someone who had lost someone wouldn’t feel like doing anything, but Zach is different and independent enough to handle himself in the outside world. Zach went to the plane crash by himself to look for clues about his father’s death. “It took maybe a hundred yards more, and then he was there. In just about every news story Zach had read about the crash of Tom Harriman’s place, they had talked about the scored earth the first responders had found” (Lupica 105). Zach isn’t afraid anymore and has the strength to go face the bad things in his life. Because of how supportive everyone was to him when his father had died. Zach had sworn to be the same, especially for Kate and his mom because of how reliable he is. Kate always looked after Zach and was always there with him in troubling situations. Zach just wanted to do the same for her. “And even from a couple of hundred yards away, Zach could see who was with her on the track. He saw the guy pulling Kate by her hood and was sure he could hear her silent scream. And Zach Harriman was on the move” (Lupica 150). Zach followed Kate since he noticed how she left him early to go somewhere he wasn’t sure about. Zach found this weird and decided to trail behind her. He would make sure there was some distance between him and her but then all of a sudden, she disappeared around the corner. Next thing he saw, was a man pulling on her and he came to her rescue, just like she would do for him. Zach fought the man trying to take Kate and he ran off.
