Social networking sites, a.k.a. SNS, enabled connections to the outside world and socializing to be done indoor. The importance of SNS in daily life can be reflected by a ranking listing out world’s most popular websites each month. Majority of websites on the list are SNS such as QQ, Twitter and Weibo. Facebook is the second most popular website on the Internet according to Alexa Internet (“Alexa Internet”, 2015), and has attracted 1.28 billion active users since 2004(Digital Insight, 2014). This essay will discuss how Facebook has changed the valuation on “relationship”, the situation in 2006, the year Mark Zuckerberg opened Facebook to the public, that made it a success and how it spread its influence over the world from then and now.

According to Macale’s interview with Sandberg (Macale, 2011), COO of Facebook, Facebook developed everything from individual perspective and provided services that users looked for. Facebook, other than being an online community, is also a place for showing off oneself. The personal page feature of Facebook acts as a platform for users to share daily life and emotions to members of social circle, or even to all Facebook users. As Facebook culture has become commonplace in daily life, ways are found in order to practice Facebook functions in real life. For instance, “check-in” is no longer just the name of function on Facebook but often referred to the action of telling others your location at that time, the word “Unfriend” which could be used to describe “stop going with somebody” in real life.
The long lasting impact of Facebook can be attributed to a combination of situations and factors in place that made it a success. Although there are more and more SNS appearing nowadays, Facebook having simple interface which enhanced user experience is still leading in the market.
