Adversities Malala Yousafzai Faced in her Fight for Education
“They thought that the bullets would silence us, but they failed. And then, out of that silence, came thousands of voices”(page 179). In the novel I am Malala by Christina Lamb, the main character goes through many obstacles on her path to speak out against the Taliban. Malala was a young Pakistani activist who spoke out against the Taliban's oppressive rule for the education rights of all children. She spoke up when no one else would, even when that meant she would be targeted by the Taliban. In this novel, Malala faces adversities in her life by going to school when the Taliban seized control of her town, speaking out when she was being threatened, and by surviving a gunshot wound that left her in critical condition.

She was just fifteen years old at the time and she almost lost her life standing up for young women’s education rights. She was sent to the army hospitals in Pakistan where they could not offer the care she needed so she was flown out all the way to Birmingham England for the proper amount of care. The bullet grazed her temple and traveled about eighteen inches down her left shoulder, which caused immense amounts of damage. After the shooting, her brain began to swell so much that doctors had to remove a piece of her skull and implant it in her stomach. Part of her face was paralyzed and she had trouble being able to see. Many people around the world were sending Malala cards and visiting her in the hospital during her recovery. Malala took this near death experience as a second chance at life and she spoke up for education stronger than ever. Malala said, “The Taliban shot me to try to silence me. Instead, the whole world was listening to my message now” (page 151). Throughout all of her traumatic experiences, Malala became an international symbol and hero for people all around the
