This year's summer book is called Fahrenheit 451. It is written by Ray Bradbury and is described as a utopian and dystopian fiction. The book takes place about a hundred years in the future in a city in the United States. According to an introduction at the beginning of my version of the book, the title Fahrenheit 451 references the temperature at which a book or paper would burn. This title is creative an adequately references the main focus of the story, which is about certain futuristic firemen who start fires instead of stopping them. The main task for these firemen is to burn any and all traces of literature from the city they inhabit. This includes sometimes burning the entire house that the books or documents were found in. The story gives us information that makes the reader feel sorry for him or even relate to him. I empathize with his feeling in the beginning, the feeling of complete numbness or emptiness, and his frustration and confusion in the middle of the story. Professor Faber, Montag's friend and mentor, is also a likeable character. He is the man who first introduces Montag to books when Montag caught him reading in the park. Faber later becomes a great ally to Montag and helps him preserve some pieces of literature and escape the city. Clarisse McClellan is one of my favorite characters in the book, even though her time in it was short. Clarisse is a young girl who Montag meets when he is on his way back home from work. She is seen as unusual as she loves to enjoy the outdoors. She is believed to either be killed or imprisoned later on in the book. I relate to her so called unusual antics and interests. Mildred Montag and Captain Beatty are both characters I truly did not like at all. Mildred is the wife of Guy Montag and does not seem to show any romantic feelings towards him throughout the entire book. I got the idea that she had a failing mental health as she relied on virtual people and sleeping pills. Beatty is the captain of the firemen in Montag's home city. He is skilled in manipulating his men as well as Montag and seem to represent true evil. At times, he seems to be caring, but he hides a more sinister …show more content…

The government controlling this city is determined to eradicate any traces of books and literature and replace it with technology and advertisements that make the residents blissfully unaware of the past or of any negative things described in books. They are unaware of the emotion, both good and bad, one could experience when reading a book. The theme is pretty easy to determine since it is constantly referenced throughout the story. I think Bradbury wrote this book to give our nation a sort of wake-up call. He wrote it to warn us of how technology and luxury could completely take over our lives and send our country into a state of war and ruin. The message speaks clearly in the text. We must conserve the knowledge of the past and learn from it rather than trying to forget and destroy
