Montag is a firefighter living in a time period when all types of books are illegal. If someone has books, firefighters like Montag are supposed to find them and burn them. Books are banned because a group of powerful people have made it where other people are not supposed to think for themselves, or act as individuals. This society mostly watches television and does whatever they are told by those in power. Although Montag is supposed to be on the right side of the law he is flawed and committs some crimes of his own. While this may be true, by the end of the book Montag has changed. His thoughts and actions have become those of a brave hero. Montag is technically enforcing the law and for a long time believes he is doing the right thing until he meets a girl named Clarisse. She talked to Montag and helped to change the way he thought by asking him questions. Clarisse didn’t talk to Montag about books; they talked about if Montag was really happy and this affected Montag deeply. He and a friend come up with a plan to plant books in firefighters homes and to start printing books again in secret. He believes this to be for the greater good in hopes to change the current system. Before he gets far, his wife betrays him and tells the authorities about his actions and then leaves him. Montag is forced to choose and finds himself on the other side of the law. He is literally hunted by mechanical dogs, the hunt is shown on television and he barely escapes with his life. After he escapes he joins a group of like minded people that call themselves “The Book People” and starts a new life. Those in power consider Montag such a threat that they bomb his city.
