The Beetle Like the city ahead of them Montag’s head is filled with smoke. He may be leading them physically but he has no clue where his mind is now. Montag. Montag with people around and feeling alone. Montag. Montag walking to a place he knows but feels strangely lost. Granger. Granger, confident in his choice of letting Montag lead but doubts the change will be revolutionary with just the few people he has. Granger, thinks of the daily, small changes that make a small differences they all are making with their books. Their minds. Their war. Their victories. Montag stand silently standing at the edge of an abyss of rubble and broken glass. Burning. Burning. Burning the already broken city. Broken city, the same broken city it was before only now it’s been reduced to ashes. “Broken. Not like it wasn’t before but broken and burning. Burning like the books it wanted gone, but now it’s gone.” Montag’s thoughts seemed to pour out of his mouth with no realization to what he’s said. “Sorry. Where to now?” Montag turns back to Granger as a child doesn’t know where a dark hall ends before turning on the lights. “We go through as far as we can. If we can’t go farther forward we go around, find the road.” Granger. Granger, now thoughtless but not mindless. Footsteps. Footsteps through the broken city. A city of silence. Silence, except the crackling of the fire and the footsteps. About a mile into the city there’s a building on it’s side in the road. So they turn and walk until they’re back to the edge. The edge of a volcano. As the walk around the city they are greeted by smoke from another source in the sky. Montag stops for the second time and stares in silence at a familiar car. A beetle. Mildred’s beetle. On fire. Off the side of the road. Montag leaves the others as if he were the wind, his feet move without his mind working. Empty. Empty like the burning city behind
