Mia Morton Mr. Brown English 9 College Prep 15 May 2024 The Downfall of Humanity in Fahrenheit 451 In the dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, technology is used by society as a distraction from the problems they are facing in the real world and it leads society to it’s doom. Society remained completely oblivious to the war until it happened. Even with signs warning people of the war, society was too concerned about what was happening on television. This meant that they didn't notice the warnings, making them extremely unprepared for the war to come. These events show how technology distracted society from the real-world problems that were approaching, leading them to chaos and destruction. This reveals just how oblivious people in this society were to nature, and how little they appreciated it. Technology seems to be the only thing anybody ever cared about and paid attention to. There were many signs of the upcoming war; “A radio hummed somewhere’...war may be declared any hour. This country stands ready to defend its.” and, “The firehouse trembled as a great flight of jet planes whistled a single note across the black morning sky” (Bradbury 30). Even with the radio explicitly stating that war was coming and the jets flying over the sky, which were likely connected to the bombing that occurred at the end of the book, people still did not attempt to prepare or even acknowledge the upcoming war.
